A Lower East Side cultural institution at 236 East 3rd Street, founded in 1973 by Miguel Algarin and fellow writers of the Nuyorican movement. Famous for its poetry slams, it also programs jazz, hip-hop, Latin music, and theater, and served as a rite-of-passage stage for 1990s MCs. The building closed in late 2023 for a multi-year renovation, with programming continuing at partner venues around the city.
