Tone Center Records is an independent jazz/rock and fusion imprint founded in 1997 by producer Mike Varney as part of his Novato, California-based Shrapnel Label Group (alongside the metal-focused Shrapnel Records and Blues Bureau International). Born out of Varney's love of 1970s fusion pioneers like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever and Tony Williams Lifetime, the label specializes in high-energy, virtuosic instrumental jazz-rock and guitar-driven fusion. Its roster gathers many of the most respected players in the genre, including Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Larry Coryell, Steve Smith, Mike Stern, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson and bassist Victor Wooten. The label remains part of the still-operating Shrapnel Label Group catalog.
