Magnatune is a pioneering open-music label founded in 2003 by John Buckman in Berkeley, California, built on the motto 'Internet Music Without the Guilt.' It released all of its catalog under Creative Commons licenses, signed artists non-exclusively, and split sales and licensing revenue 50/50 — offering full albums for download in formats up to CD-quality WAV. Its catalog spanned classical, jazz, electronica, ambient, world, and new-age music. In 2024 it stopped offering new subscriptions, licenses, and trading, though some music remains free to stream on the site.
