Cuneiform Records

Silver Spring · Maryland · US

Cuneiform Records is a fiercely independent avant-garde label founded in 1984 by Steve Feigenbaum in Silver Spring, Maryland (greater Washington, DC), an outgrowth of his Wayside Music mail-order business. It champions uncategorizable, boundary-pushing music with a Rock in Opposition spirit, spanning progressive and experimental jazz, jazz-rock fusion, the Canterbury scene, art-rock, and electronic music. The catalog ranges from archival Soft Machine releases and work by Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt to outsider-pop pioneer R. Stevie Moore and contemporary creative-music artists like Janel Leppin, Tomeka Reid, and Anthony Pirog. After a 2018 hiatus the label was revived and remains active, operating largely through Bandcamp and mail-order while deliberately avoiding major streaming platforms.
