Cherry Red Records is a prolific UK independent founded in 1978 by Iain McNay, trading on the tagline 'The Unmistakable Sound of Independence' and putting out well over 300 physical releases a year. It works as both a frontline artist label and a heavyweight reissue/catalogue house, spanning progressive rock, punk, post-punk, soul, reggae, jazz, glam, metal and 80s pop, and even publishes books and runs a monthly radio show. Its sprawling family of imprints includes Esoteric (prog), Captain Oi! (punk), SoulMusic Records, Doctor Bird (reggae) and Él, and its catalogue touches artists from Hawkwind, Pere Ubu and The Residents to Kim Wilde, Dinosaur Jr. and The Fall. The label is very much active, operating out of London.
