Awesome Tapes From Africa began in 2006 as a blog by Brian Shimkovitz sharing cassette recordings collected across the African continent, and evolved around 2011 into a full record label. Now based in Berlin, it reissues and licenses African music spanning Ethiopian jazz, West African soul/funk, South African amapiano and electronic styles, and traditional sounds, working directly with artists to revive and extend their careers. Catalog highlights include Hailu Mergia, Nahawa Doumbia, Ata Kak, DJ Black Low, Teno Afrika, and Jess Sah Bi. It is active as both a label and online store.
