Arhoolie Records

El Cerrito · California, USA · US

Arhoolie Records is a pioneering American roots-music label founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz in El Cerrito, California, beginning with a field recording of Texas songster Mance Lipscomb. Over six decades it built a landmark catalog of country blues, Cajun, zydeco, Tejano/conjunto, gospel, and old-time string-band music, recording artists like Clifton Chenier, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Mama Thornton, Flaco Jimenez, and Country Joe McDonald. Smithsonian Folkways acquired the label in 2016 and continues to distribute the catalog worldwide. The affiliated nonprofit Arhoolie Foundation preserves Strachwitz's archives and the Frontera Collection of Mexican-American recordings.
