Amherst Records is one of the oldest independent labels in the US, based in the Buffalo, New York area (Williamsville) and founded by Leonard Silver. Its catalog leans jazz, soul, R&B, and pop, anchored by long-running jazz-fusion mainstay Spyro Gyra and spanning artists like Glenn Medeiros, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, and Jackie DeShannon. In 1984 the label acquired the AVCO Embassy/H&L master recordings, adding 1970s soul and R&B acts such as The Stylistics, Van McCoy, and The Chambers Brothers to its holdings. The label remains active, continuing after Silver's death in 2017.
