A&M Records
Santa Monica · California, USA · US
A&M Records is a historic American label founded in 1962 in Hollywood, California by trumpeter Herb Alpert and music executive Jerry Moss (the 'A' and 'M'), operating for decades out of the former Charlie Chaplin Studios lot. It grew into one of the most successful 'major-independent' labels, home to the Carpenters, the Police, Sting, Cat Stevens and Bryan Adams, before being sold to PolyGram in 1989 and absorbed into Universal Music Group, with operations folded into Interscope-Geffen-A&M in 1999. The original independent is long defunct; in November 2024 UMG revived A&M as a brand/imprint under the Interscope Capitol Labels Group, but it has no standalone official website of its own.
