A New York charity that keeps working musicians housed and treated — rent and utilities to stop an eviction, a pro bono network of doctors for the uninsured, instrument repair or replacement, disaster relief. Its Musicians' Emergency Fund is aimed at people who have made a living playing blues, jazz and roots music, and it works by phone and door rather than by application round: they average about 30 emergency cases a day and roughly 9,000 assists a year.

Musicians who have made a living playing blues, jazz, and roots music know they can call our office at any time or walk through our doors for help in solving an emergency. The Jazz Foundation's Musicians' Emergency Fund provides housing assistance, pro bono medical care, disaster relief and direct financial support in times of crisis.

Being an organization that helps musicians in crisis, JFA is accessible 7 days a week, like a family. If someone can't work because they've had an accident and are now behind in their rent, we pay their rent and/or utilities to keep them from eviction. We also make sure there is enough food on the table and even go to the hospital with them for treatment if they are alone. In other crisis situations, we are needed to repair or replace instruments so that musicians can keep working. JFA keeps its work with musicians completely confidential.
