Foundation for Contemporary Arts

New York · US

A New York foundation established in 1963 by Jasper Johns and John Cage, which describes itself as created and sustained by artists to benefit artists. It has given out over 8,000 grants totalling more than $31.5 million. Music/Sound is one of its five disciplines. Most of its money moves by nomination — the $45,000 Grants to Artists cannot be applied for — but Emergency Grants are a genuine year-round open application: small, fast, project-based money for a confirmed performance or presentation you suddenly cannot pay for. They make roughly 15 to 20 of them a month from about 100 applications.

Emergency Grants is a year-round, multi-disciplinary program that offers immediate, project-based assistance to artists living and working anywhere in the United States, for projects occurring in the U.S. and abroad. Each month FCA receives an average of 100 Emergency Grant applications and makes approximately 15-20 grants in the range of $500 to $3,000 each. Applicants may request any amount in that range and, if granted, may receive full or partial funding. The average grant is currently $2,200. Artists should apply 8-10 weeks (no earlier than 10 weeks) before their project's public presentation date. Emergency Grants and Grants to Artists award recipients must observe a three-year (36-month) wait period before applying for an Emergency Grant.
