Canada's national public arts funder, with six granting programs that between them paid grants to more than 3,000 Canadian artists, 390 groups and 1,950 arts organisations in 2024–25. For an individual musician the relevant streams are Explore and Create (its Artistic Creation grant takes applications any time before a project starts) and Arts Across Canada and Abroad for travel and touring, all run through one client portal — and each program publishes its own staff email, so questions go straight to the people assessing your file.

Who can apply — in their words
To benefit all communities, the Canada Council for the Arts supports Canadian and First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, groups and organizations that create, produce, disseminate, and promote the work of artists. Artists and arts workers developing their work or advancing their careers can apply for funding. Artists, curators, critics and other arts workers seeking support for artistic projects, professional development or distribution and sharing are included.

Deadlines and notification of result dates may change. Consult this page for up-to-date information before applying. There is no limit on the total number of applications you can submit each year. Each funding opportunity has its own application limits that align to the calendar year (1 January to 31 December). Explore and Create — Artistic Creation: deadline "Any time before the start date of your project or activity", notification of results "Usually within 5 months of submitting your application". Some streams are instead fixed-date: Supporting Artistic Practice — Composite Activities 25 November 2026; Creating, Knowing and Sharing — Short-Term Projects 8 April 2026 / 22 July 2026 / 25 November 2026.
